Ocean Exploration and Sensing:

A Hands-On Introduction

Course Description

Embark on an exhilarating voyage into the realm of ocean exploration and sensing under the expert guidance of Dr. Jessica Sandoval from AquaVela & Dr. Togun from SeqHub Analytics. Through this mentor-led experience, students will gain hands-on experience in building and deploying sensing systems for ocean exploration.

What Students Will Learn and How

  • Introduction to Ocean Exploration: Understand the importance of ocean exploration, the challenges faced, and how technology helps overcome them.
  • Foundations of Ocean Engineering: Learn basic principles of how to design for working in the ocean environment (i.e., buoyancy, hydrodynamics) and how this is used in underwater robotics.
  • Data Science in Oceanography: Explore data science in oceanography, learning to analyze oceanographic data for valuable insights.
  • Introduction to AI in Ocean Sensing and Data Processing: Discover how artificial intelligence enhances ocean sensing for autonomous data collection and data analysis.
  • Hands-On Kit Assembly: Receive a kit to build a sensing system to test water quality. Engage in pre-kit arrival activities to familiarize yourself with the concepts.
  • Mentor-Guided Sessions: Join weekly virtual sessions led by Dr. Sandoval & Dr. Togun for guidance in assembling, testing, collecting and analyzing data from sensing systems.

$3000

  • Toolkit included
  • Access to mentor led sessions

Duration

  • 6 weeks
  • July 7 - August 16, 2024
  • Mentor-led sessions scheduled for 2 hours per week.

Onboarding

At the beginning, students will meet with a SeqHub Academy mentor to plan and discuss a flexible schedule tailored to their needs.

By combining asynchronous learning, hands-on experimentation with the provided kit, and mentor-led guidance, this ocean-themed experience aims to ignite students' interest in ocean engineering and data science while empowering them to explore and innovate.

Commitment

  • 6 hours weekly for live sessions
  • 12 hours weekly for self-paced learning

Course Support

  • Access to asynchronous learning materials, including curated and prepared video lectures, reading materials, and interactive quizzes, via LMS platform.
  • Guidance and mentorship from Dr. Sandoval during weekly synchronous sessions, providing opportunities for questions, feedback, and progress discussions.
  • Technical assistance available to address any challenges encountered during the kit assembly process
